3 Things You Can Do With Leftover Pumpkins

What are some useful things you can do with leftover pumpkins when the season is done? We’ve got a few ideas for you!

It comes to the end of Halloween, and the remnants of the fun-filled activity of carving a pumpkin are on your front porch. Or perhaps just pumpkins you have used for decoration and won’t fit with your Christmas décor.

What can you do with pumpkins, besides throw them out?

Roast Pumpkin Seeds

Scoop out the seeds, rinse and dry them and lay them flat on a baking sheet. Toss with olive oil or melted butter, and salt, and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes!

A yummy homemade snack for those afternoons when you need a little pick me up!

Make Homemade Pumpkin Puree

Pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie) can be used in a variety of recipes from muffins and pancakes to soups and pastas. You can grab a can from the store but you also can make your own.

This typically works better with smaller pumpkins that haven’t been carved yet.

Cut your pumpkins in half, scoop out the strings and seeds (save the seeds and roast them later). Lay the pumpkin face down on a baking sheet and bake at 350F for about 45 minutes or until the inside is fork tender.

Remove the skins and blend the insides/flesh in a blender or food processor. If the pumpkin seems dry add water by the tablespoonful until the right consistency. If it is too wet strain it through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer.

Store pureed pumpkin in an airtight container or freeze to use later.

Bring Pumpkins to a Farm for Animals to Eat!

Check local farms or animal shelters to see if they can use leftover unpainted pumpkins. If you have decorated your pumpkin in any way, it should go into the garbage. Unfortunately, paints, glue, sparkles or other fun decorating materials are not animal-friendly.

At Generations Marketplace, our animals love pumpkins! You can drop them off at our farm so we can let our critters enjoy a yummy treat.

Check Out Our Farm

If you drop off pumpkins, don’t forget to check out our play area for kids and stop in the Marketplace for homemade baked items and locally made goods!
